US weekly jobless claims hit 1.4 million, falling slightly short of economist estimates

Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. It indicates a way to close an interaction, or dismiss a notification.US jobless claims for the week that ended Saturday totaled 1.43 million, the Labor Department said Thursday. That came in slightly below the consensus economist estimate of 1.45 million.

Continuing claims, the aggregate total of people receiving unemployment benefits, totaled 17 million for the week that ended July 18.More than a million Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, reflecting the continued high level of pandemic-induced layoffs as the US rolls back its economic-reopening efforts.

In just a few months, the more than 54 million unemployment claims filed during the coronavirus pandemic have far surpassed the 37 million during the 18-month Great Recession. The latest figure is more than double the 665,000 filed during the Great Recession's worst week.
