in bridging the gap between the IT team and other divisions within the enterprise.

On top of building the mixed cohorts, 1-800-Contacts also created new "hives," or streamlined reporting structures for each member. So while a front-end developer might sit within a group dedicated to making it easier for customers to get eye exams remotely, they would still report into the broader engineering team.

The change has already produced results. Based on responses to internal surveys, those who had been in the "swarms" the longest were the happiest and most engaged employees across the company, according to Larson. Before the new workflows were put into effect, the company released roughly 1,500 new products or upgrades in a year. This year alone, 1-800-Contacts is on track for over 4,200 releases.
