Finance minister Tito Mboweni said on Friday that businesses hoping to open and thrive post the coronavirus lockdown should consider amending their labour market policies to favour unemployed South Africans.

Spelling out how government's R500bn relief fund aimed at helping vulnerable South Africans, businesses and the economy would be used, he said things had changed over the last two decades and the country's unemployed workers were being left behind.

“The other two were probably Malawian or Zimbabwean. Today almost 100% are non-South African,” he said. “The proportion of South Africans working in a restaurant must be greater than that of non-South Africans,” he said.“The government, I am quite certain about this, will have to put in place labour market policies which are supportive of the increased employment of SA youth without discriminating against non-South Africans,” he said.

“People who want to approach banks or government for funding and so on must demonstrate that they do have a labour market or employment policy that favours South Africans,” Mboweni said.Spaza shop owners should also upgrade their businesses, he added.

If South Africans are serious about wanting to work there should be no sense of entitlement. Fair work for fair pay!

Now he’s telling us who to hire? 😳

Long overdue

People employ whomever they want to hire and cheap labour is beneficial to all companies and people who actually come to work and not unionists who know their rights more than their jobs... The minister just trying to be relevant he will forget what he said in 24hrs.

The gorvment assume that the private business will auto-correct itself.. they fought apparethed they won't fight modern day starvation is south African and slavary of foreigners as long as it doesn't affect their tender business and political power...

The government should work for the people. Tired of having foreigners with better job opportunities than locals. Government needs to start putting south africans first

Dear Tito. We will hire whoever we want. Thank you, small businesses.

Government must force them to do dat

South African are too lazy. Rather want handouts. Not willing work harder to earn a living

They will finally enforce the current laws. Why wait this long.

He's right.

Good mr minister

They always Come with New things at the end, it will benefit those who are not beneficial to the System this is our Government we know them.

These retail stores most of them hire a foreign national who are undocumented because they exploit them and they know that they desprate. They also know that they wont pay them provided fund they just working for them. This is very sad.

Can my fellow south africans do the same like the foreign compatriots....8 to 10 hours standing or driving

My heart breaks for us retail worker's who especially work in food retail 💔

Security guards Spur Spar Shell Garage Sasol Garage Engine Garage Total Garage BP Garage Truck drivers Domestic workers Teachers Doctors Car guards Shoprite These are millions of jobs which require no special skills stolen by immigrants from unemployed South Africans
