Apple's updated device-tracking system will likely have two clear advantages over the Tile system, which will help it make device tracking a bigger selling point:
Apple appears to be building AirTags around the Ultra Wideband Bluetooth standard, which is much more accurate than standard Bluetooth. The AirTags system is expected to tap into the Ultra Wideband Bluetooth chips in iPhone 11 devices — UWB can pinpoint objects within a 30-centimeter range, compared with the 1-meter range offered by Bluetooth. This has obvious advantages in terms of locating a device.
Apple has a much larger network of devices to tap into than Tile, which could improve search capabilities. With iOS 13, Apple it such that lost devices could emit a Bluetooth signal that could be picked up by any nearby Apple devices, which would then relay location information to the device owner. Though Tile has a similar feature, Apple's larger user base could make its service more effective, which could lure users to the AirTags system.
More robust tracking services will help strengthen the appeal of a particular tech ecosystem. If Apple ushers in a new standard for device tracking with the AirTags launch, competitors will likely be pushed to follow suit. Apple,
Nothing about this sounds great. 😔
