Proteus' bankruptcy underscores the volatility of the DTx landscape — and talks of an acquisition by Otsuka could signal trouble for DTx startups

Pharma titan Otsuka ended up partnering with Proteus to develop the Abilify MyCite System — sensor-enabled versions of the drug maker's schizophrenia and bipolar disorder medications.

And Proteus may have benefited from an earlier pivot to focus on addressing the care needs of other patient populations, as patients suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are distrustful of medications that include a tracking component, per MobiHealthNews. Proteus' bankruptcy underscores the volatility of the DTx landscape — and talks of a potential acquisition by Otsuka could signal trouble for DTx startups if massive pharma companies can bring their capabilities in-house. Otsuka is reportedly in to buy up Proteus, and we wouldn't be surprised to see other pharmaceutical companies pursue an acquisition-based strategy to bring the capabilities of DTx startups in-house.

DTx firms focusing primarily on one therapeutic area, like diabetes startup One Drop, could be especially at-risk of acquisition by pharmaceutical companies since they'd have less focus areas — and revenue streams — to fall-back on.
