PETALING JAYA: Budget 2021 provides provisions for infrastructure projects that will trigger economic growth, says Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim.

The former Finance Ministry secretary-general said critics of the Budget had overlooked the RM15bil allocated to kickstart big infrastructure projects to drive a quicker economic recovery and achieve the projected GDP growth of 6.5% to 7.5%.

Although construction works are planned and funded by the government, Sheriff said the execution on the ground is carried out by contractors. “The important thing is how the contracts are awarded. There must be public accountability so that taxpayers will know the contractors are the right ones for the job, ” he added.

“We carried out countercyclical government spending to inject new blood into the economy, ” he added.
