SWCorp has chosen Taman Petaling, Kepong to set up a community farm under its “Taman Inspirasiku” programme.

This is part of SWCorp’s efforts to promote urban well-being among city folk and to encourage recycling through its “Trash to Cash” campaign under the same programme.

SWCorp Federal Territories director Mohd Zahir Shari hoped the programmes would promote stronger community ties and that people learn the importance of recycling.“This farm will represent Kuala Lumpur, the same as in other states where SWCorp will also select a neighbourhood to start a community garden to compete, in the best community farm in the “Taman Inspirasiku” competition, ” he said at the launch of the farm along Jalan 30/39 in Taman Petaling.

Mohd Zahir said they also made compost using food waste from the Kepong Baru morning market as fertiliser for the vegetables. The farm, measuring 1,600sq ft, is built with permission on reserve land belonging to Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Drainage and Irrigation Department.Currently, brinjal, ladies fingers, chilli and Malabar spinach are grown at the farm.

TPRA chairman Vigineswaran Vicky said the land where the community farm was located used to be a dumpsite.Also present at the launch were Alam Flora Sdn Bhd Kepong operations executive Mat Mawi Ibrahim.Article type: metered
