Julia Baird, who has herself survived some difficult times as she relates in Phosphorescence, won non-fiction and book of the year awards for that meditation on “awe, wonder and things that sustain you when the world goes dark”

The seven-shop Melbourne chain Readings was named retailer of the year and managing directorsaid it had survived with “great difficulty and bungling. I was extremely nervous when lockdown began but was amazed by what everyone achieved. People were wonderful in supporting us and our online sales jumped by more than 500 per cent.”

Julie Burland, chief executive officer of Penguin Random House, which won the publisher of the year title, said last year had been extraordinarily demanding and forced everyone to re-evaluate every aspect of their business.
