Big beverage manufacturers are calling for container deposit schemes to be extended to wine and spirit bottles to encourage recycling.

Container deposit schemes that pay consumers to return bottles and cans for recycling should be extended across the nation and broadened to include most alcohol containers, a round-table hosted by Visy with theBundaberg Rum chief executive officer John McLean said such schemes were a “fantastic” way to encourage recycling but questioned why they do not include wine and spirit bottles.

Visy executive chairman Anthony Pratt, one of Australia’s richest people, said that only by diverting waste material from landfill could Australia ensure supply of recyclable material and avert dangerous greenhouse gas emissions. The round table was attended by leaders of the major retailers as well as food and beverage manufacturers, federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley and the deputy leader of the opposition Richard Marles.Ms Ley said that it was critical that all levels of government continued “chipping away” at the contents of householders’ red bins for general waste.

He welcomed moves by Tasmania and Victoria to introduce container deposit schemes next year, joining NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. But he called on states to harmonise the schemes to make them easier for industry. At the moment each state accepts different types of bottles and uses different collection rules.
