Wind energy company pleads guilty to criminal charges and ordered to pay over $8M in fines after at least 150 eagles were killed at its wind farms in 8 states, federal prosecutors say.

It’s illegal to kill or harm eagles under the migratory bird act. However, a wide range of industries — from energy firms to manufacturing companies — have lobbied for years against enforcing the law for accidental bird deaths.

There are an estimated 31,800 golden eagles in the Western U.S. with an estimated 2,200 killed annually due to human causes, or about 60% of all deaths, according to a study released last week by leading eagle researchers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other entities. Charging documents said company representatives, including ESI’s president, were warned that eagles would be killed if the company built two wind farms in central and southeastern Wyoming, and also knew about a risk to eagles when they authorized the repowering of a New Mexico wind farm, about 170 miles from Albuquerque.

ESI agreed under a plea deal to spend up to $27 million during its five-year probationary period on measures to prevent future eagle deaths. That includes shutting down turbines at times when eagles are more likely to be present.

How much do oil companies pay for oil spills that cause the death of millions of fish that could have sustained humans and others species? What about the skyscrapers’ shiny glass panels that blind and kill thousands of birds every day?

We're rumored to have golden eagles in our area, but I've never seen one. I can see the turbines sprinkled all over the Tehachapi mountainsides though. I hope that site is using every tactic possible to keep birds safe as we also have condors.

That’s 53500 or so per eagle. That’s a big fine that will effect people’s jobs.

Lolol if you pay to kill them it's cool. Our society is a joke 😂😂😂

Bro, if you're gonna allow wind farms this has to be considered unavoidable collateral damage

Get it out of here. Save GodBlessUSA56

Glad there is accountability here. Still waiting on accountability over oil spills. Is that a thing?

Hey, at least the eagles weren't killed by climate change.

Wow, and not even an endangered species.

This story, although tragic, feeds Trump’s BS about wind turbine grave yards. More birds (millions) die by flying into glass windows than the 150 bald Eagles that got hit by wind turbines. It’s all the way the media spins this. Do we completely give up wind turbine energy? Nope

Always👇🏼

That's not enough for killing 150 eagles. The last time I checked it was our national bird.

Wind is the worst choice for energy.

You would think someone could come up with a sonar type sound to distract them from area. If they want to make it a priority it can be done . Maybe this nice little fine will get the ideas flowing lol

FOX13 They aren't a farm. Call them what they are, a facility, a wind facility, and bird murderers, bats too. So much for the wonderful renewable energy 🤦‍♀️ I have never heard of any eagles dying when we were drilling for oil Mmmmmm….clean energy.

U.S. wind energy company pleads guilty to killing 150 eaglesAn American wind energy company that pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges after at least 150 eagles were killed, most hacked by turbine blades, has agreed to spend as much as $27 million on efforts to prevent more deaths. I'm so ambivalent about this, wind energy is clean and so essential, but wiping out species of birds is too high a price. There has to be a way to operate wind turbines safely for local wildlife.
