Research found that 57% of respondents would support an indefinite moratorium on data centres connecting to the electricity grid in response to the energy crisis, with 88% supporting a one-off windfall tax on companies profiting from oil and gas prices.

The vast majority of Irish people either support or strongly support the idea of imposing a one-off windfall tax on energy companies and other firms that have profited from the soaring price of oil and gas, according to research compiled by Ireland Thinks.

Wholesale gas prices have risen by as much as nine times in the past year while petrol prices have hit record highs, both driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and resulting sanctions.
