Voters in four Bay Area cities approved new taxes on top employers this week, a sign of support for making their corporate citizens – Netflix, Tesla and Clorox among them – contribute more to the costs of tackling housing affordability and homelessness amid a sputtering economy.
“The compromise approach was essential,” Mayor Pat Burt said. “They were indicating they were going to spend unlimited funds to oppose not only the business tax measure but the gas transfer fee ballot measure that was also on the ballot.” Other cities, including Los Gatos and Oakland, also crafted compromises with their business communities.
Kalb said he hopes the money will go toward addressing homelessness and reducing violent crime, including funding operational expenses for facilities housing formerly homeless people as well as for violence prevention and intervention programs, services and strategies.
