The local egg industry is in a crisis, with SA's largest poultry body warning its products are not moving off shelves as lower-income consumers battle to afford even the cheapest forms of animal protein. | News24_Business

Egg shells are actually one of the best food items you can compost, because they add essential minerals and nutrients that are great for plant growth.

The local egg industry is in a crisis, with SA's largest poultry body warning its products are not moving off shelves as lower-income consumers battle to afford even the cheapest forms of animal protein. And with farmers struggling to pass on soaring feed and electricity costs to already cash-strapped customers, smaller egg producers are opting to exit the industry. The South African Poultry Association estimates that about 10% of the approximately 200 smaller farmers had shut up shop in the past six months.

Dr Abongile Balarane, general manager: egg organisation for SAPA, told News24 the industry was definitely in a crisis, but he hopes to see some recovery in the next few months as the rising cost other forms of animal protein, such as beef, pushes more consumers to return to eggs.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. _Business Lower the price?

_Business Salaries not increased for over 3 years what did they think will happen. They don't deserve increases bla bla go jewa peanut butter le jam mae a tura.

_Business They must lose business vele. The price of eggs doesn’t make sense in this country. Eggs are a byproduct of farming chicken, surely it is not that costly to farm them because the conditions are already for the chicken farming

_Business I was shock this weekend, 30 from 56 to 80 rands eggs 🥚... they can keep it .

_Business Lower the damn prices then😒😒🤨

_Business Plan B ke eng? Lower the prices, akere le a bona re a itshokolela. I'm sure it wouldn't be such a bad idea to cut prices than to let the eggs rot and throw them away.

_Business And why they not reducing prices?

_Business People have chicken that lay eggs now 🤣🤣 I really hope we'd get back into growing our own veggies too.

_Business Let the rich buy them since they are only good consumers in this country. Le re tsaya cheap maan.

_Business They are way too expensive anyway

_Business

_Business What is not in crisis in South Africa right now?

_Business Yup. This is another effect of the malfeasance perpetrated by the myanc and its deployed cadres.

_Business EGGonomics say that if demand is low you must reduce the price. 😎😋

_Business They deserve it after selling us tiny eggs and calling them LARGE eggs. Mxm

Tsogang3 _Business This explains the tray of smelly wrotten eggs I purchased from spar recently 🥚😭🤒

_Business Oh so now businesses need the consumers, funny how that happens

_Business Carey on voting for the elite

_Business They are unnecessarily expensive

_Business Eat plants instead.

_Business True.

_Business Global plan. Egg shortage in the USA and UK too.

_Business And there's high chances of buying rotten eggs from these retail supermarkets

_Business Then they should lower their prices

_Business They overpriced eggs and they are shocked when we don't buy them... Lmao

_Business What do you expect. Poultry prices have increased exponentially over the last year due to increased import tariffs, strikes at the ports created an unbelievable mess, and now load shedding cutting through suppliers bottom line. Businesses are just trying to survive at this point

_Business Well with the price of a try these days its no wonder.... Looks like the chickens eat Gold and Platinum these days.....

_Business a revo is loading,

_Business Looks like a global agenda to me ✋🏼

_Business Good protest if the prise increase exponentially don't buy the product.use substitute goods.

_Business Economics say that if demand is low you must reduce the price...

_Business

_Business Companies would rather dump fruit and veg products than sell them at cheaper price. Farmers also won't sell at lower prices. I have personally experienced this many times. Just look at the municipal markets and all the wastage.

_Business This is an agenda from the west. Next, you will see an increase in the price of eggs

_Business 'I own farms'

_Business HKGK everything is coming apart at the seams

_Business Drop the price then. There's only so much people can pay before they learn to do without it.

_Business They must appreciate Cyril. They thought his crookedness will only enslave Africans while prosperity stays with oppressors. Some how, it cuts across larger numbers - unintended consequences my pink people.

_Business They too expensive, we on the other hand our business is doing well

_Business ITS AS WELL GIVE PROTEIN EGGS TO THE POOR. THEY HAVE NO INCOME TO BUY.FOR WE LIVE IN UNEQUAL SOCIETY THATS ON GRANTS FOR EVER

_Business Ummmm how about a price reduction
