The telecommunications giant announced Monday they’re buying BAI Communications, the company that owns the current wireless network in Toronto’s underground subway system.“This commitment is particularly important to ensure access to 911 services across the entire subway system,” the statement reads. “Today, TTC users with any mobile provider can call 911 only where the cellular network exists – on station platforms, concourses and approximately 25 per cent of tunnels.
Most mobile customers have little to no service in the subways and after an increase in violent incidents on the TTC in the past year, many are calling for that to change. “We know safety is top of mind for Torontonians. Residents and visitors expect wireless connectivity when they’re travelling on the TTC’s subway system,” said Ron McKenzie, Rogers’ Chief Technology and Information Officer. “The agreement to acquire BAI Canada is a significant first step in modernizing and expanding the existing network to deliver enhanced 5G wireless service to millions of transit riders throughout the entire subway system.
Some of Toronto’s mayoral candidates are concerned the Rogers purchase might not benefit all riders, but only those using their services. If you have found a spelling error, please, notify us by selecting that text and pressing
