It’s too early to predict whether the marine disaster in Baltimore early Tuesday morning will have an impact on container traffic in Halifax, even temporarily, said a port spokesperson.

A view of the Dali cargo vessel which crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge causing it to collapse in Baltimore, Md., on Tuesday morning. - Reuters “With most of Baltimore’s port terminals and all of its container terminals behind the collapsed bridge, containerized exports at or planning to depart from Baltimore will either need to wait until the waterway re-opens or be rerouted by truck or rail to alternate ports,” said Judah Levine of global freight platform Freightos.

MacLean said she doesn’t know of a container ship ever colliding with anything in Halifax harbour, and that pilots and tug operators use simulators to take part in scenario-based training. The space between the top of a passing cargo ship and the bridge decks is calculated prior to transit.
