MEC for Education, Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation Matome Chiloane has urged parents and communities to give space and support to learners during the matric examination period. He was briefing the media on the province’s readiness for the Matric end-year exams.
Chiloane briefed the media at the Edenvale High School, on Gauteng’s East Rand. About 700,000 learners are expected to write their matric final examinations nationally.“This examination takes place after 12 years plus for some. We are urging communities even if they want to disrupt, striking for water or electricity keep away from our schools. We are appealing that let’s give our children support across. Including grades below Grade 12,” he says.
Chiloane says more invigilators have been appointed and will be deployed to schools that are high-risk during this year’s matric examinations. An advanced scanner will also be used to scan every candidate before they enter an exam room. He says disruptions won’t be tolerated during exams and no smart watches and cellphones will be allowed in the exam room. Chiloane said this year’s group of matrics are the ones that have been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and they are being applauded for doing well so far.
A total of 189 693 candidates have been registered to write the final exams, including part-time candidates and learners who are rewriting.
