Darwin real estate agent Tamika Andrews struggled to find people to fill vacant rental properties as little as six months ago. Now, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, she is being overwhelmed with interest in properties and rental vacancy rates have fallen through the floor.

And the number of rental listings is down more than 60 per cent on the five-year average, according to data from CoreLogic. While it might seem like a boon for real estate agents, Mr Killian said the vacancy rate was too low. "When the vacancies get that low, it certainly puts a lot of pressure on the marketplace," Mr Killian said.Darwin has seen demand for rental homes spike in recent months amid an influx of people from interstate.With most interstate borders due to reopen by Christmas, some are worried the NT's newest residents will leave as quickly as they came.
