The Institute for Race Relations says it believes authorities have let down citizens on matters relating to racism and xenophobia.

The institute was commenting on the government’s national action plan aimed at combating racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia.

The plan which was launched in 2019 is a product of consultations between the government, Chapter 9 institutions and civil society. The institute’s head of campaigns Gabriel Crouse says despite strong condemnation from the government there’s still very little accountability or consequences for perpetrators of racism.

“The issue seems to be ramping up with that famous letter of Minister Lindiwe Sisulu where she basically said our entire Constitution is racist and is to blame for everything that is going on. It’s very sad to see the principles of non-racialism, accountability, and the principles entrenched in our Constitution get so disrespected in practice.”Share article
