It was completed in 1870 and Amanda Vail lived in it with Vail’s three sons from his first marriage, Stephen, James and George, Amanda’s sister, Julia Eno, and a servant.
Describing her initial impressions to a representative of the Morris County Historical Society, she admitted, “The house was a mess . . . a lot of what real estate agents call ‘deferred maintenance’ and bad 1980s design choices when we bought it.”
