Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke says the Albanese government’s “Made in Australia” policy is about backing domestic manufacturing in an effort to protect the nation’s economic sovereignty. Pressed on Sky News about whether the government was allocating the program’s grants and loans to businesses and initiatives without proper tendering processes, Burke said he would make “no apology for backing Australia”.
“What the ‘Made in Australia’ policy is about making sure is to say we can build things in this country again. And countries all around the world, when Australia stopped backing Australian industry, they kept backing theirs,” he said. “We should have enough confidence in the nation and that drives the nation to say we can make things here too.” Burke said he wanted to ensure Australian households had the option to purchase solar panels from local manufactures rather than relying on China.
