Foxes and wild dogs have long wreaked havoc on livestock and native wildlife, but a new control measure has hit the market to target feral pest populations.

PAPPutty is a toxic paste used alongside leg hold traps that acts to euthanase the dog or fox after it has been caught. With the correct permits and requirements, landholders can purchase the toxic paste to use in conjunction with traps.

The executive director of Risk Assessment Capability at the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, Sheila Logan, said the paste was a much more "controlled way" of targeting wild dogs and foxes. "It gives landholders another option that they consider to be humane and we know is effective," he said. For land managers trying to protect livestock and native species, finding ways to control the populations is often time-consuming and costly.

"Foxes impact over 95 threatened species, so foxes in particular have very significant impact on wildlife," Mr Glanznig said. Also known as para-aminopropiophenone, the poison works by rendering the animal unconscious and eventually euthanasing it.
