Berkeley City Councilmember Walter Mork was expanding his business operations 100 years ago. His business is still family-owned by his descendants and still in operation, above, located today on Sixth Street north of Dwight Way.A century ago, most Berkeley city councilmembers had day jobs and full-time occupations that ranged from University of California professors to local manufacturers.

This meant a big promotion of driving to California’s scenic attractions. The spread included a photo montage showing points of interest that could be visited by car, including Berkeley itself , the Redwood Highway on the north coast, Monterey and Pinnacles National Monument in the Salinas Valley.On May 30, 1924, Berkeley’s Tuolumne summer camp near Yosemite “opened of the season with several guests,” the Gazette reported. “George Warne is back at camp with a string of good saddle horses.

He “established the first market in Berkeley at the corner of Telegraph Avenue and Allston Way,” where a lawn is now at the northeastern edge of Sproul Plaza, just outside Sather Gate. I remember reading references in early UC histories to this grocery store serving the campus. His daughter was Berkeley’s city clerk at the time of his death, and three of his four children lived in Berkeley.
