South Africa has some of the highest rates of gender-based violence worldwide, including rape, female homicide, and domestic abuse. The first quarter crime statistics of 2024 show that some 300 children and more than 900 women were murdered.In May, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill and the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill.

The National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill sets the stage for a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to combating gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa. This legislation marks a pivotal stride in guaranteeing the safety and security of women across the nation.
