Justice Minister Thembi Simelane has revealed that law enforcement authorities have imposed fines and confiscated counterfeit goods worth millions in various provinces.
This follows the formation of a multidisciplinary task team, comprising various ministers, tasked with dealing with thethat have led to the hospitalisation of hundreds, and deaths of children who ate contaminated food. Simelane briefed the media on the team’s progress, earlier in Pretoria, alongside other members of the task team.
She says, “The counterfeit, contraband and illicit good operation has seized various items, pharmaceutical products, clothing, estimated to around R4.9 million in the Western Cape and Gauteng Provinces alone.” “The unit has also seized cash to the value of R417 000 and imposed fines for various contraventions. In KZN, law enforcement officers uncovered three warehouses, which contained counterfeit food, clothing, pesticides, large amounts of expired food, which are estimated to the value of R800 million.”
