Sabrina Withers' grandmother was forced to sell her home of 40 years to Melbourne Airport to make way for a proposed east-west runway.

She is now thinking of selling, because "having the flight path on our back doorstep will be unbearable". "At the very least, we need a night-time curfew, but we also need sound insulation in our homes and noise abatement procedures to be robustly followed," Melbourne Airport Community Action Group spokeswoman Hannah Robertson said."Research shows aircraft noise increases anxiety and depression, it is known to disrupt sleep. It affects children's learning and cognitive function where schools are affected by aircraft noise.

Planning controls in place to manage the amenity impacts of aircraft noise are based on a 16-year-old noise forecasting map. "We are conscious that residents around the airport will be subjected to aircraft noise to varying degrees and as part of our planning process we will be seeking to understand that in more detail," he said.
