Low income farmers are “being failed” as the country’s top ten beef companies rake in billions each year, a leading member of the Irish Farmers Association claimed on Thursday.
His comments come as members of the IFA on Thursday continued their blockade at the Dunnes Stores depot in Cornelscourt, Dublin. The ten companies are all members of Bord Bia’s Beef Member List and are involved in the slaughter and processing of Irish beef. The 2018 Teagasc National Farm Survey outlined that the average farm income of beef farmers in 2018 fell 21% to €8,318 – 80% below Ireland’s average industrial wage.“Beef farm families are on their knees. The ongoing protests are a reflection of how serious this issue is and the need for action and change.
He said: “This report again highlights the high profits being made by other stakeholders in the beef sector. Everyone, except the farmer who produces the product, is making high margins off the back of our green image and grass-based production.
