The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority says Equinor now has two of the four approvals required before activity can begin. "The rigorous assessment process undertaken by NOPSEMA took almost eight months and involved a range of specialists with considerable environmental, scientific and engineering experience," the regulator said in a statement on Wednesday.Equinor was first granted a petroleum title over areas in the Bight in 2011 and now has an accepted environment plan.
If approved, Equinor plans to begin work in late 2020 with the operations expected to last for 60 days.NOPSEMA said it had imposed stringent conditions on its approval to ensure a high level of protection to the environment, in recognition of the Bight's unique values and sensitivities.

OMG
how about an expose' on how much Norway charges as a levy to anyone who comes and drills oil in their Territory because it's interesting that we're not charging them anything
madness the lunatic in charge of the asylum
Money people
Just typical from the sellout governments we are used too and Scomo is even worse than the last. Im sure god told him this was a great idea.
What can you say when these terrible decisions are made and sho are the people making them were they voted in or given a cushy job by our so called Wonderful politicians
And will Norway get more royalties than us?
PipBb4 I wonder which minister is getting the back hander with this one
MWhalan The day after our top firefighting experts called on this govt to stop mining coal, gas and oil to reduce CO2 emissions. Ecocide being delivered by the people we voted in. How utterly stupid.
Disaster
WTF!!! This is disgusting! Exactly who gave the approval? Pristine marine environment about to be destroyed for filthy fossil fuel ‘exploration’. Will they come down here to clean up the oil spills?
What happened with Coober Pedy?
Bad news.
No no no no no to infinity no!
well that's fcked.
Fantastic news we need this type of development to create wealth and jobs
Why? Why!!!!
Who pays for the clean up? We do. How much tax will they pay? Zero This is so thoroughly stupid yet predictable.
ScottMorrisonMP If you have any political survival instincts at all you’ll squash this before it ever eventuates. If you allow it you can kiss your political future goodbye, but I think you’ve already done that by abandoning Australia for a “holiday” while we fight to survive!!
Can we sell off everything?
I can’t say I’m surprised. With clean Nuclear energy (which gives an opportunity to produce hydrogen for the transport sector) continuously undermined by the scare mongers, in Australia the need for fossil fuels will continue to grow. Another own goal by the environmentalist.
Brilliant news, as progressive governments continue to force out oil producers in North America and Europe, Australia is well placed to cash-in on this opportunity. This is going to create a huge amount of jobs for Australians and inject billions into the local economy. auspol
Here we go again... it’s all about money... fuck the environment and our SA beaches, marine life, etc. And which government jerk gets a bonus as a result. No wonder the planet is burning.
Idiots!
Are you goddamn serious?!
I can see the headline one year from now, it ain't good.
ffs. haven't they be warned that the distance to the ocean floor and how bad the swells in the bight are that it's a high risk of an oil spill?
😪
Kiss the Bight goodbye, environmental lunatics aided and abetted ScottMorrisonMP
Of course. Because this govt DGAF
Let WE vote on everything. No more drilling. No more spin.
Wtf wtf wtf
