AI can't solve this: The coronavirus could be highlighting just how overhyped the industry is

Big AI firms like DeepMind, OpenAI and Facebook AI have remained relatively quiet throughout the crisis.

Those techniques include good, old-fashioned statistical techniques and mathematical models. The latter is used to create epidemiological models, which predict how a disease will spread through a population. It's not over hyped, the technology just isn't good enough yet. There are still things it needs to be able to do before we can really call it 'AI' anyways. It's way too early to give up on it.

AI is not to the point to jump in, but automation is. You'll be seeing more of it with social distancing measures in place.
