Rona Ambrose, the former federal Minister of Health, has joined the board of directors of U.S. based Juul Labs Inc., an electronic cigarette manufacturer.
Juul is facing multiple lawsuits in the United States and Canada for allegedly marketing its products to young people. It’s also run into trouble for exaggerating the safety of e-cigarettes. In appointing Ambrose — who introduced stricter regulation of tobacco in Canada, including a cigarette tax and restrictions on the marketing of flavoured tobacco — the company is looking to regain the trust of regulators and consumers.
“Our government is incredibly proud of the fact that smoking is now at an all-time low, and we will continue to close any regulatory gaps we see and make sure we shut down what is a very impactful lifestyle on the health care system,” she said in the House of Commons in October 2014.
