The move comes after it found higher-than-acceptable levels of a contaminant in extended-release versions of a drug that controls high blood sugar in type-2 diabetes patients

The Food and Drug Administration said it has asked five companies to voluntarily recall a diabetes drug, metformin, after the agency’s testing found higher-than-acceptable levels of a contaminant that could cause cancer.

The widely used drug controls high blood sugar in type-2 diabetes patients. The FDA said it found the impurity in extended-release versions of the drug, not immediate-release versions that are more popular.
