Aid for virus-hit airline companies not ‘bailout’, says union

The National Union of the Flying Attendants of Malaysia says the local ailing airlines industry is in urgent need of help from the government as more than 100,000 workers, including pilots, flight attendants and ground staff, have either had their pay frozen or been forced to take massive salary cuts. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, June 7, 2020.

THE usage of public funds to save airline companies hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic should not be seen as a bailout, said Ismail Nasaruddin. The National Union of the Flying Attendants of Malaysia president said the massive “overnight” losses incurred by the airlines were not due to mismanagement but an abrupt halt in world travel.
