Lord Mayor Sally Capp says she had no idea the State Government was thinking of establishing a safe injecting room in the City of Melbourne until a day before it was announced to the public.
North Richmond has been the hub of Victoria's heroin trade for two decades, and a safe injecting room was recommended by the coroner after a spate of drug-related deaths in the area. The independent panel's report found the North Richmond facility recorded 119,000 visits in 18 months, saved at least 21 lives, and safely managed 3,200 overdoses.
"As soon as the department came back to me on the Wednesday, that summary went to Cabinet on the Thursday and I phoned the Lord Mayor within an hour of the Cabinet having made that decision," Mr Foley said. Cr Capp added the cohealth building was a residential building that included a number of residents who were transitioning away from being homeless. The council was planning a renewal program to "really enliven that part of the city".
this sounds like a great deal for the smackos... safe injecting site ... plenty of shops to steal from ... all that is missing is the pawn Shop so they can hock what they just stole... so they can buy some gear to shoot up ..... at the Victoria Markets. Good one DanielAndrewsMP
Oooh! Someone got their snooty mayoral nose well out of joint
This will be great for the area and give much needed support to the people who struggle with addiction around the markets/North Melb
