Girls Who Code exec: Tech companies need to support women 'very differently' to close skills gap

Girls Who Code COO Dr. Tarika Barrett joined CNBC's 'Squawk Alley' on Wednesday to discuss ways tech companies can close the skills gap and support women beyond the hiring phase through pay equity, promotions and more flexible work-from-home and family leave policies.

by the National Women's Law Center, women held 77% of jobs in education and health services pre-pandemic but account for 83% of the jobs lost in those two sectors combined.

"When you look at the data, you have to kind of acknowledge the problem we're grappling with. Women make up less than 25% of the tech workforce, and for women of color it's only 18%," Dr. Barrett claims.Hiring is only the beginning It's true that women are disproportionately missing out, despite national conversations about the lack of diversity in tech. According to data from the, women make up 47% of all employed adults in the U.S., and they hold only 25% of computing roles. Of that 25% of women working in tech, Asian women make up just 5% of that number, while Black and Hispanic women accounted for 3% and 1%, respectively.

As unemployment continues to rise, tech companies are struggling to find skilled workers to fill positions. That's according to the latest CNBC Technology Executive Council survey, which includes tech decision makers from some of the largest U.S. companies and organizations. In that survey, 32% of respondents say that it's gotten easier to find qualified employees to fill open positions, compared to 20% who say it's gotten harder compared to a year ago.

Go to school to get real world experience and certification and your good. Microsoft always promoted women over men and minorities over anyone else before the stereotypical white tech guy got promoted. I was there 10 yrs and saw it every year.

Statistically, women are not as interested in coding as men are. Women prefer jobs that have to do with people interactions such as being a doctor. Men prefer jobs that have to do with things --- fixing cars and engineering.

When the man in your life says be a secretary and raise a family... he seems Obsolete. When a university says be the leader by opening doors they seem like geniuses. LearnToRead

There is nothing stopping anyone from entering Tech except gaining the skills necessary. Maybe we should start a campaign for male nurses instead of just accepting different people choose different career paths.
