The Australian tourism sector is expected to cop a $55 billion hit over the next financial year amid uncertainty over the reopening of state borders and the assumption international travel bans will remain until July 2021.
A note on the figures warns that future outbreaks of the virus leading to the closing of individual states or more lockdowns would have a further impact on the value of the industry. "In March, unemployment went from 5 per cent to 17 per cent. Without JobKeeper no one can predict, but it would be over 25 per cent," said Mr Phillips, who also owns the Reef Teach education business in Cairns.
A source close to the government said as borders begin opening up, Tourism Australia expects to ramp up domestic marketing activity to encourage Australians to undertake interstate travel, particularly as international borders remain closed.
