Don’t freeze foreign worker hire in plantation industry, say estate owners

Estate owners say the implementation of the movement-control order has worsened foreign worker shortage, as the closure of borders prevented workers from returning after their home leave, and prevented replacement workers from coming in. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, June 27, 2020.

THE Malaysian Estate Owners’ Association has asked the government to exempt the plantation industry from the freeze in hiring of new foreign workers, and allow those on home leave to return. In a statement today, the MEOA said the plantation industry relies almost exclusively on foreign workers for field work, especially in harvesting oil palm fruit bunches.
