I was a health insurance exec for 20 years and shamefully lied to Americans about the drawbacks of a single-payer system. I'm coming clean amid the disastrous response to the pandemic. (by wendellpotter)

Wendell Potter is a former vice president of Cigna and was a health insurance executive for 20 years before becoming an advocate for US healthcare reform.wrote a bookPotter says he was pressured by PR companies to spread misinformation and disparage single-payer systems in order to convince the public that reform was not needed.

While there, I read in the local newspaper about a large pop-up clinic that was being held at a nearby country fairground. The story said many people had driven from hundreds of miles away and had slept in their cars to get care they couldn't otherwise afford. Nowhere in that binder would you see that the United States has always ranked dead last every year the Commonwealth Fund has conducted its research, including every year since the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010.

Despite spending considerably more for both health insurance and healthcare in this country, we rank at or near the bottom on most measures of the health and well-being of a country's citizens. On a per capita basis, more Canadians are being tested and fewer are getting sick and dying. This may shock Americans who still believe the lies I told about the Canadian healthcare system.

Here are statistics you will not find in talking points and briefing documents coming out of the U.S. health insurance industry. All the data are from the Commonwealth Fund's January 30, 2020, report entitled:The life expectancy in the United States is 78.6 years . In Canada it is 82 years.

AllOnMedicare wendellpotter 'shamefully lied' is an oxymoron, Wendy. We miss you and your always welcome to lie for us again. Just say the word.

wendellpotter When you turn a basic human right -such as our health- into a business, people suffer and die. When is America going to wake up?

wendellpotter Maybe he’d like to show his remorse by donating of his all stock options or proceeds from stock options, and bonuses that I’m sure he carnivorously consumed off the people’s premiums while employed to a Covid fund? You know, put his money where his pie hole is?

wendellpotter if insurance cost/risk is based on the number of people per risk pool, the cost is lower per person with fewer (a single) pool.
