The key Nikkei 225 index fell 0.58 per cent, or 132.61 points, to end at 22,751.61 while the broader Topix index lost 0.62 per cent, or 9.78 points, to 1,572.96. European stocks were broadly higher along with the euro as EU leaders clinched an agreement on what they boasted was a historic rescue plan.
