Labor MP Peter Khalil says Beijing’s investigation into alleged wine dumping is “very concerning” for Australian producers and the future of the industry. Trade tensions are escalating with China after the economic superpower flagged possible tariffs on wine exports. Beijing is investigating whether Australia is dumping wine at low prices on the Chinese market, consequently hurting the prospect for local producers.
“If China puts levies or import duties on Australian wine, that’s going to be devastating for the Australian wine industry, about a third of exports go to China,” he said. The Labor MP called on the government to “do everything possible and appropriate through diplomatic channels, making sure they address these allegations in the sturdiest and most forthright way”. “The idea that Australia is dumping cheap wine into the Chinese market seems to be quite preposterous,” he said.
PeterKhalilMP I think what the Chinese are doing is right...locally the wine manufacturers dump cheap wine at 5 dollars for a carton of 5-litre wine and make people alcoholic..the cost of treating those alcoholic in hospital is on me as a taxpayer which I don't like. Chinese are smart not us.
