The study attributed the US' lead to its still-sizable advantage in the semiconductor industry, as Chinese firms still largely depend on designs from US companies and manufacturing from South Korean and Taiwanese firms.
The report also emphasized the centrality of AI to US military strategy, as it asserts that the "the long-term prospects for DoD [Department of Defense] to maintain a lead over the Chinese military in AI-enabled systems, weapons, and operational concepts will, at least indirectly, depend on the ability of the United States to keep its edge over China in AI at the national level."
