JASIN: Fake news spread on social media alleging that certain people have tested positive for Covid-19 has devastated the livelihood of three businessmen and disrupted the lives of their schoolgoing children in Merlimau, says Jasin's MCA chief.

Koh Chin Han said the businessmen who owned a restaurant, salon and photoshop respectively had been badly affected by those spreading false information on social media.

“An irresponsible person posted an old picture of these businessmen and their children holidaying in Thailand, alleging that they had tested Covid-19 positive,” he said on Sunday after meeting the affected group. Koh said, in fact, the businessmen had returned from Sabah on Sept 25 after a holiday and had tested negative for Covid-19.The problem started when a team of health officers made a routine check at a restaurant, and someone took a picture of the department’s vehicle parked outside the premises and posted it together with an old picture of them holidaying in Thailand.

“A picture of the businessmen’s children was also added in the post, which caused the schoolchildren to be stigmatised in school," he said. According to Koh, the businessmen also underwent a second test on Oct 1 to assure people that they were not infected.“I have also checked with Melaka health and anti-drug committee chairman Rahmad Mariman, who confirmed that these businesses are free from Covid-19.
