GEORGE TOWN: It has been more than a year since Covid-19 reared its ugly head, but the Ayer Itam market has never fully recovered and the once busiest market in Penang is no longer as bustling as it was once before.

Stall owner Rohana Noor Ishak, 51, said she could earn between RM700 and RM900 a day prior to the movement control order that was first implemented in March last year.“Due to this, I have no choice but to cut my stock by at least 40%.“Most of them bought dry items and spices that they could keep for some time – onions and potatoes were out of stock then, ” she said when approached on Wednesday.

“During the early days of the pandemic, I had to reduce my stock by 50% because there was no crowd at the market.“Now, I also allow my customers to use the e-wallet system so that we can reduce human contact. However, most of my regular customers are old and they are not that tech-savvy.
