More than 60 organisations from across the Oceania region have committed to eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging, and to ensure that any that remain is recyclable, reusable or compostable.

Under the ANZPAC Plastics Pact, businesses such as Coles and Woolworths have pledged to achieve a series of ambitious plastics waste reduction targets within four years, by 2025.

"In recent years we've removed thousands of tonnes of plastic from our packaging and stores, but we know there's more to do, and we can't do it alone," he said. Among the businesses are representatives from all stages of the plastics supply chain - manufacturers like Amcor, retailers like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, and recyclers like Veolia.

"Design is really important in terms of ensuring that you create packaging that has the best chance of making it through the system and being sorted and collected and recovered," she said. But there are problems at the other end of the system too, Ms Donnelly says, with limited recycling infrastructure in Australia.

Major companies sign 'radical' deal to drastically reduce plastic waste by 2025Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region are joining other countries across the world in committing to reduce the amount of plastic packaging ending up in landfill and polluting the environment. And consumers will pay for it... Companies will profit further. The 2025 industry targets were established in 2018. Can’t remember seeing anything about them in the War on Waste TV programs. Is the ABC catching up finally? The industry has had an earlier packaging covenant in place for over 10 years now, but it was driven by self-interest & conflicts of interest and achieved very little. Companies just hide behind these schemes as a justification for not doing enough.
