In the six years since over-the-top streaming services launched in Australia the landscape has changed dramatically.
Foxtel’s ill-fated Presto launched first, followed by Stan, before international behemoth Netflix entered the market. Now users have to spread their spending budget between at least nine major streamers and 12 minor and specialty services. The market is becoming more and more fractured as studios begin launching their own platforms, making it even more challenging for local streamers to access content and provide a reasonable service.
This week, Nine Entertainment Co, the publisher of our mastheads, announced their annual results and on the surface it looks like good news for its streaming platform, Stan, but as the streaming industry continues fracturing and household budgets tighten, is that always going to be the case?, media writer Zoe Samios joins Nathanael Cooper to look at the challenges faced by local streaming services.
