New preliminary results from the Sisonke study on the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccination in South African healthcare workers have showed that a booster shot of the vaccine is 85% effective in preventing COVID-19-related hospitalisations.

The Phase 3b study was conducted by the South African Medical Research Council from the middle of November when the booster shot became available to healthcare workers to the middle of this month. The study, which has not been peer-reviewed was based on a second dose of the J&J vaccine administered to more than 69 000 healthcare workers between 15 November and 20 December.
