Conservative finance critic says he’s disturbed by Pierre Poilievre’s vow to fire Bank of Canada governor

OTTAWA—Conservative party finance critic Ed Fast says he’s disturbed by a promise by leadership candidateFast, who is also helping run Jean Charest’s leadership bid, said Poilievre’s position undermines the party’s credibility on economic issues.

His comments have attracted alarm from a wide range of places, with critics arguing that a politician directly interfering in bank operations sets a dangerous precedent. The bank operates independently from government. Fast said while it is fair to demand answers from all officials as to how and why inflation in Canada is running at record highs, but the independence of the central bank is crucial.
