The federal government is proposing to use an industry-specific cap-and-trade system or a modified carbon pricing system to set a ceiling for emissions from the oil and gas sector and drive them down almost 40 per cent by the end of this decade.

The two options are contained in a discussion paper Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault will publish Monday. It is the first glimpse Canadians are getting of how the Liberals expect to implement the oil and gas emissions cap promised in last year's election.

Background documents and government sources suggest the cap for 2030 will be very close to the one proposed in the new national Emissions Reduction Plan in March — 110 million tonnes. That's a 46 per cent cut from 2019 levels, and 32 per cent over 2005.The oil and gas sector has not had emissions that low since 1992. In the last three decades, as production of gas, conventional oil and oilsands soared, emissions from the sector have risen 83 per cent.

Companies that don't buy enough allowances to cover their emissions will have to buy allowance credits from other oil and gas companies that bought more than they need.Sign up for The Climate Barometer, delivered right to your inbox Most of Canada's oil and gas producers are already cutting emissions due to other regulations and a desire to become a cleaner, more competitive option for global customers.

The Oil Sands Pathway Alliance, with six of the biggest oilsands companies on board, is aiming to get emissions to net zero by 2050, mainly through carbon capture and storage projects that trap greenhouse gases before they go into the atmosphere and then store them back underground.

True LiberalHypocrisy

Well that won’t end up costing the pleabs anything in the long run🙄🙄🙄

Hypocrites, Alberta should separate and be the highest GDP country in the world. Let these fools figure out how to run a country with no Economy. theJagmeetSingh gmbutts ABDanielleSmith JustinTrudeau CandiceBergenMP fordnation

So, the PM flew to Alberta to flip pancakes then flew back to Montreal. Why are we worried a about climate crisis? This all sounds like BS to me

I don’t know how this guy still has a place after his first shot at C-11

Idiots

So the people will pay more while the company's reap the rewards... this guy needs to go your a WEFpuppet and the world is waking up and soon you will all be gone

Liberal made energy crisis coming

I have no use for Steven Guilbeault. It is time to work on preventing Canada from going into a recession and to produce more oil and LNG to stop Russia's control over Europe. The Liberal government helped to create this mess and now it is time to fix it.

We are dealing with criminals. People are having to dig into their food budgets and these Liberals are hiking taxes. If Canada eliminated *all* its CO₂ emissions today, by the same day next year China will have replaced it all with their annual increases alone. DespotTrudeau

Never support a party that doesn’t support domestic energy production.

This liberal government is the most corrupt government in living memory,so what do you really expect.Honesty out of a liberal. Why are you surprised The law do not apply to the liberals ( according to Trudeau) just look at all the scandals involving them.

So liberal_party is ignoring what is happening in Europe and is doubling down. Thank you TruAnons…

Make it a daily habit. Carbon pricing just puts a higher price tag on* pollution, and companies can afford it right now. This isn’t a climate strategy, it is a revenue stream. Nothing significant will change on this file until there is buy in from all parties. When that eventually happens, it will be too late. extinction We need to target the forestry industry ... and now !!!
