Australia’s ambassador in Beijing has had his term quietly extended, as Treasurer Jim Chalmers expressed concerns over China’s tough talk on Taiwan.

Australia’s ambassador to China has quietly had his term extended with the Albanese government backing continuity among key personnel as efforts to repair bilateral relations with the Communist regime remain delicately poised.

The exercises, which included live-firing ballistic missiles, were condemned by many countries including Australia, prompting a tirade from China to the Albanese government not to side with Taiwan. “That means no unilateral change to the status quo. It means restraint and de-escalation. It means calm and consistent language. And from our point of view, it means working with partners in the region, to the extent that that’s possible, to deliver that stable region, that prosperous and peaceful region that we desperately need to see.”

Mr Dutton owned up that he made a mistake last week when he called Taiwan an “independent country”, saying he misspoke. Mr Xiao also said a “good start” had been made on repairing bilateral ties between Canberra and Beijing since the election but offered no indication when sanctions on $20 billion of Australian goods would be lifted or detained Australians freed.
