Not making diversity and inclusion a priority can both hinder your company’s ability to attract new talent and drive some of your current workers away

Veronica Frisch is the executive vice-president and head of Randstad Sourceright Canada

It’s clear that companies are connecting the dots when it comes to diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, at work. But our Randstad Sourceright 2022 Talent TrendsAccording to our research, 88 per cent of Canadian business leaders say DEI is embedded in their talent strategies and is integral to everything they do. But when it comes to practice versus theory, just 54 per cent say their hiring practices supported their diversity goals in 2021.

At a time when the job market is highly competitive and the skills gap continues to grow, the ability to attract and retain top talent is crucial. DEI goals need to be embedded in all key strategic planning activities to reinforce behaviours and messages. If you want a truly diverse and equitable organization, DEI should be integrated into every aspect of the hiring process – from intake to hire. This includes posting, sourcing, screening and interviewing, providing feedback, and determining offer parameters.

How about we let private businesses decide for themselves what is crucial, then let their potential pool of clients decide if they agree or not?

DEI needs to DIE.

2/2 I hire based on my operational needs. I don't look for visual diversity or say hey! we need a special needs person to meet our disability quota. If someone with autism for example meets the operational criteria (say number crunching), then I'll hire them.

1/2 If by diverse you mean various skill sets and backgrounds, I agree. I work in IT and yet, I hired a historian, a YouTube a future human rights lawyer etc. They also happened to be from various cultural backgrounds but all grew up in Canada so they had that common thread.

I like working for companies that prioritize productivity and success. I will actively avoid companies promoting woke ideology especially those that ask my vax status.

Diversity has never been a strength. Divisive policy tend to drive a wedge between people. It always has, it always will. Hiring for skin colour is the very definition of systemic racism.
