Countries around the world are revisiting atomic energy after Russia’s war in Ukraine upended fossil fuel markets and sent power bills surging, while public sentiment in Japan has been shifting in favour of turning idled plants back online.

Separately, the Nikkei newspaper reported that Kishida will instruct officials to consider extending the lifespan of existing reactors beyond the current maximum of 60 years. A venture between NTPC, which relies mostly on coal to supply energy to the world’s fastest growing population, and India’s monopoly nuclear developer is in advanced talks with the government to develop two 700-megawatt reactors in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified as the discussions aren’t public.

NTPC, Nuclear Power Corp and the Department of Atomic Energy didn’t immediately respond to emailed requests for comment.
