Opinion: With the return to the office, some have been left to wonder whether that means a return to the work that people from marginalized groups are forced to do in order to adapt to inhospitable workplaces.

, and to exercise patience with peers, we must also consider whether we’re embracing toxic ways of working and relating. Are we tasking workers with the management of innocent missteps or more harmful microaggressions? Should we be offering etiquette tips or fixing workplace culture?

For some, the pandemic — and remote work — offered partial respite from a regular barrage of microaggressions. Black people didn’t have to worry about having their hair touched. Microaggressions — and the work they require — tax the energy, effort, and time of individuals that would be better put toward other activities, like their jobs. More importantly, they render workplaces less inclusive.important to cultivate collegial and positive interactions at work, we must also be careful not to treat microaggressions as mere missteps. They put down their targets, intentionally or not, and erode the collective capacity of organizations.
